Governor Fletcher Announces Plan for Recovery Centers

Modeled after The Healing Place

LOUISVILLE, KY – Governor Ernie Fletcher today announced a plan to place 10 recovery centers for homeless addicted men and women throughout the state.  According to the plan, the recovery centers will be based on the successful model of The Healing Place.  Governor Fletcher explains, "We chose The Healing Place as the model for these centers because we wanted to promote recovery throughout Kentucky in a way that is proven to be successful, is cost-effective, and is designed to be replicated in any place in the Commonwealth.  We found all of those in The Healing Place model, along with the leadership to convey its success."

Founded in 1989 by members of Jefferson County Medical Society, The Healing Place has been named  “A Model That Works” by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.  Proud of its 1,600 alumni and 65% success rate (five times the national average), The Healing Place will provide consultation to the statewide program.

Jay P. Davidson, president and CEO, is the developer of the successful model.  “From the early work of Father John Morgan and Dr. Will W. Ward, The Healing Place has become the premier model for a mutual help recovery program for homeless, addicted men and women,” says Davidson.  “We recognized that the primary contributor to the onset as well as the major obstacle to reversing homelessness is drug and alcohol addiction.  Combining the elements of Recovery Dynamics (a twelve-step curriculum), the mutual help community and peer mentoring, we have developed a program that will work for anyone willing to take recovery seriously.  If you want to change, we can show you how.”

The governor’s plan calls for recovery centers to be placed in each of the six congressional districts in Kentucky.  The Hope Center in Lexington, already a successful replication of The Healing Place, will join in providing consultation to the centers.  While no specific timetable has been established, the plan will provide for statewide access to recovery for thousands of Kentuckians who are in need of such programs.

“Governor Fletcher’s plan is a tremendously significant step forward in the battle against homelessness and addiction,” says John Hubbard, M.D., chairman of the board at The Healing Place.  “Its success will directly impact significant issues of primary healthcare as well as reducing drug-related crime, prison and emergency room costs, and reducing hidden costs to communities that now provide services to the homeless population.”

The Healing Place, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is supported by gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.  It is also grateful for support from Louisville Metro Government, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and federal funds through Congresswoman Anne Northup.
