According to the Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, substance abuse and addiction account for $140 billion of our approximately trillion dollar healthcare bill. Whether the abuser is with or without insurance, that cost is passed on to each of us. The Will W. Ward, MD Clinic provides free healthcare and medications to thousands of patients annually. How we do that is the real story. All of our medical professionals are volunteers. Through long-standing relationships with the U of L School of Medicine and Spalding School of Nursing, students use our facility to learn about treating people in recovery, and our clients benefit from expert medical care.
When someone comes in or is brought to our non-medical Sobering-Up Center (Detox), it may be in lieu of being taken to jail or the ER. This trip may be repeated multiple times by one individual at a huge expense to the community. The ER physician will treat the addict or alcoholic for the acute crisis, but there is usually no underlying diagnosis made and definitely no treatment plan given. The person may have a number of chronic health issues related to addiction or alcoholism, hepatitis, hypertension or diabetes, all of which will worsen until the addiction is treated. We insist the client begin to take responsibility for his or her own health-to show up for clinic appointments, have blood sugar monitored daily, or take blood pressure medication regularly. We move clients from a culture of addiction to one of self-care. Their overall physical condition improves, and they manage their own healthcare rather than being an endless drain on the medical system. The result benefits us all-the client, the healthcare system and especially the community. |
