Freedom
Freedom from Homelessness-Freedom from Addiction

Mike T.At age 46 I had finally had enough of drinking since my first sip at age 10. I was raised in a good home with loving parents who taught me right from wrong and did the best to help me prepare for life. My three brothers stayed on the right path, but I preferred the crowd at the local pool hall.

I tried Alcoholics Anonymous in 1979, as well as other programs through the years. I was even in and out of The Healing Place twice before (I hit rock bottom). I became, for the first time in my life, humble and teachable. Back then Ron M. was holding morning meditation, and I made myself go every day. I started reading the Big Book and really reading it and understanding what those two guys were trying to do. I started to pray and talk with my Higher Power (the God of my understanding). Things started to change little by little….

15 Years of Restoring Life to the Addicted,
Returning Hope to the Homeless
by Jay Davidson
President & CEO

Jay Davidson-President & CEOFor 15 years The Healing Place has provided men and women the opportunity to gain freedom from homelessness and freedom from alcoholism and/or addiction.

As the new President and Chief Executive officer, I am truly humbled by the past accomplishments of The Healing Place and the men and women who are no longer homeless or victims of the disease of addiction. Because of all of the public and private support of many individuals, corporations and government agencies, The Healing Place has become a "Model that Works" in Louisville, Lexington, Raleigh, N.C., and in Richmond, Va.

As we enter a new era of opportunity and success for The Healing Place, the demand for the recovery program continues to grow. We have the challenge and blessing of continuing to provide a successful recovery program to the indigent and underserved while helping other communities replicate a "Model that Works." I believe we can and will be successful in decreasing the demand for drugs and alcohol by helping men and women find sobriety, while increasing recovery program services for those who need them.

I am excited about this challenge because The Healing Place has the best and most competent staff in its history. They are dedicated and empathetic to the demands of those suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. We are supported by a very dedicated and passionate Board of Directors focused on the mission and committed to ensuring the continued success of the organization.

The future of The Healing Place is bright and exciting. I have the best job in the world. I want to thank everyone for their confidence and support as we begin the next 15 years.

Alcohol Problems – More Common
Than You Think!

Alcohol Problems:

  • are the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in America.
  • destroy millions of families and rob millions of young people of their futures.

Teenage Drinking:

  • has many serious consequences besides car crashes (the leading cause of death in this age group).
  • Teens who drink are more likely to commit suicide, do poorly in school and engage in risky sexual behavior.

Do alcohol and crime go together?

  • 2.5 million arrests for offenses that involve drinking.
  • In almost 2/3 of homicides and serious assaults, either the offender, the victim or both have been drinking.
  • Alcohol is often involved in rape and other sexual assaults.

Where can a person with an alcohol problem find help?

  • A toll-free telephone number, 1-800-662-HELP. You can speak directly to someone about substance abuse treatment, request printed material on alcohol or other drugs, or obtain local substance abuse treatment referral information in your state.
  • Or call The Healing Place for information.

From the President

I often refer to ours as a “spiritual program.” Often there are misunderstandings about that, and meaningful discussions ensue.  I get to explain that “spiritual” doesn’t mean “religious” and that “God, as I understand Him,” won’t mean exactly the same thing to any two people. One truth is that there is only one God, but we each understand Him personally, individually, and never completely the same as anyone else. Another truth is that men and women do find God at The Healing Place.  If they don’t, they don’t find sobriety, they don’t find serenity, they don’t find restoration.

One cannot understand The Healing Place without understanding this: Our model is about more than learning not to drink or drug. It is learning to look inside ourselves, to see the disease, the failures, and the poor choices, wrong attitudes and behaviors. This cannot happen without finding God in the process. In fact, we tell our clients repeatedly throughout the process “If you miss the spiritual portion of the program, you’ve missed the program.”

Client's StudyingWe come to understand that we cannot manage without God. We learn to turn our will and our life over to God’s care, and to use the divine power to admit our wrongs, to take responsibility for them, and to ask God to remove our shortcomings. We improve our conscious contact with God, experience His power to do His will, and to carry the message of this spiritual awakening to others who need it.

Everything that happens at The Healing Place is an opportunity for our clients to practice this spirituality, whether in personal times of prayer and meditation, or supportive care and concern, or dealing constructively and redemptively with conflict, or just working together in community.  God is here, and finding God at The Healing Place means learning to live everyday in His care, under His power, to do His will.

I would guess that finding God in your world looks very much the same.
