I have been involved with The Healing Place since September 13, 1995. I came through as a client. In March 1996, I became a Peer Mentor. In September 1996 I was hired on as a full-time staff as a monitor for detox and overnight. Through the mentoring of Jay Davidson, Chris Fajardo, and others, I was nurtured and went through the ranks of The Healing Place and the model.
I would say my turning point was when I was sitting in detox and I saw a guy that I had used with in the streets signing out to go to work. I saw that he was a year clean. At that point, it was a challenge to me because I thought I was better than him in the streets. It was a personal challenge for me to get clean and stay clean because of him. Something amazing that I've been a part of is the growth of The Healing Place. I was in one of the first groups in the program, but I was here in the early stages of The Healing Place when not in our wildest dreams would we imagine that The Healing Place would be a national model and basically the best program in the country. To see the transition from a homeless shelter with a makeshift recovery program to an organization with structure, and the development of an administrative office, has been a rewarding experience. I am honored to be a part of exposing The Healing Place to the world.
