Evelyn's Story
My addiction caused me to lose my home, cars, self-esteem, respect and dignity. I spent a total of 35 years of my life using drugs and alcohol. I learned to lie, manipulate, and control others. I did whatever it took to get that one more high.
In 2001, I was hospitalized after being badly beaten by my drug pusher. Afterward, while at a shelter in Richmond, Virginia, I overheard a counselor talking about sending a lady to the The Healing Place. A light bulb went off in my head and I thought, "There is a place the heals!" I spent 19 months as a resident, learning not only how to overcome my addiction but also how to read and write. I am a 2002 graduate of The Healing Place.
In 2003, I returned to Virginia to share my story with community leaders and those who knew me during my addiction. My story influenced them to start a Healing Place there. Today, I am a model citizen and neighbor, I am working on my GED and dream of owning a big house and adopting children affected by substance abuse.
