The excitement is building across Metro Louisville. This year’s Give for Good Louisville hosted by the Community Foundation of Louisville is almost here! Last year, $4.6 million dollars was raised for more than 500 nonprofits across Louisville and Southern Indiana. The Healing Place received an amazing $35,000 of that! Over the past three years, our community has generously donated more than $90,000 to The Healing Place during #GiveForGoodLou – and that is truly making a difference in the lives of the men and women we serve.

Clients who come to The Healing Place for help with their addiction to drugs and alcohol do not pay a dime for our services. To put that $90,000 figure into context, it costs us roughly $350 for someone to complete a stay in our detox. That means donations made during Give for Good Louisville have allowed more than 250 men and women to complete our detox process and provide them with the foundation for a new life in recovery.

During the past couple of months, I have had the opportunity to sit with those who work in detox at the men’s and women’s campuses. What they do on a daily basis is nothing short of amazing. I saw men come in off the streets looking for a safe place to get sober. I watched as our detox monitors worked to find an available bed and come up with a way to help three men when only one bed was open. I watched as staff at the women’s campus worked to help a tearful girl who was brought to detox by police after her boyfriend got arrested far from home. These men and women are on the front lines every day, doing what they can to help addicted men and women begin a new life in recovery.

Just before clients complete our program, they spend a week in detox giving back to those who are reaching out for help. I witnessed the love these men and women had for their brothers and sisters, and the caring support they offer. Our clients come from different backgrounds, but all of them are bound by one common thread – the disease of addiction – and they work together to change their lives and the lives of others.

This love and support, the changing of lives, is what The Healing Place is about. We don’t ask clients for money – all we ask is that they have a willingness to get sober.

Events like Give for Good Louisville, and the generosity of our community, allow us to do this. Every dollar makes a difference in the lives of the men and women we serve.
